Trauma - informed counselling & psychotherapy for adults

"Whatever happens to you as a child, becomes the blueprint for how you love, trust, attach and protect yourself as an adult - Not because you remember it consciously, but because your brain and nervous system do"

Understanding that your present reactions aren’t random is at the heart of trauma-informed therapy. It’s often the brain and nervous system’s way of showing you what still needs attention.

How I can help you

I've been helping men and women for 25 years in different settings, and in that time I’ve supported thousands of clients. Common reasons people seek my support include:

  • Relationship difficulties
  • Childhood trauma (emotional/physical/sexual abuse, neglect)
  • Feeling unimportant/low self-worth and confidence
  • Being mistreated by people now and/or in your past
  • Regular fear/stress (Anxiety)
  • Anger
  • Impulsive decision making
  • Recognising patterns of behaving
  • Low motivation
  • Feeling overwhelmed; reactive, passive, fleeing or anger in your intimate relationships
  • Memories/Flashbacks of childhood experiences (I have trained in the physical & emotional impact and treatment of Childhood Trauma; physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect)
  • Work related problems
  • A reliance on; overeating/drinking alcohol/exercise/sex and so on...
  • Impacted by a partners dishonesty/betrayal

If your difficulties aren't listed, that doesn't mean I can't help you. Please reach out to arrange a free consultation.

When therapy might be right for you

We all experience times of stress, worry and loss. It’s normal to experience anxiety before an exam or going through a major life transition. So when is the right time to reach out to a therapist?

If you feel like your experience of anxiety, grief or depression is taking over your life and is leaving you feeling exhausted and constantly overwhelmed, then this may be a sign that there’s something unresolved that wants your attention. Perhaps an old wound is resurfacing or present events are reminding your subconscious of a previous traumatic experience.

If you find yourself asking ‘why do I keep responding like this?’, ‘why does this keep happening in my relationship?’ or ‘it feels like something isn’t quite right, but I can’t put my finger on it’ then therapy is for you. Curiosity and a willingness to look a little deeper is enough to start.

During therapy, we’ll work together to uncover what is causing your emotions and reactions to feel unmanageable or overwhelming and build a clearer understanding of what’s underneath them, alongside this, creating changes to help your day to day life including future.

How therapy works

Initial consultation

Before committing to therapy or couples counselling, I recommend we meet for an initial free consultation. Whether this takes place over the phone or online, this gives us both the chance to see if we’re a good fit.

If you’d prefer to book an initial paid appointment, you're welcome to, with no obligation to rebook.

During our initial consultation, we’ll discuss what brings you to therapy and what you hope to achieve. I will give you an overview of how we’ll work together and how an appointment will typically run. This also gives you the opportunity to ask any questions. If we both feel we’re a good match, we’ll arrange a way to move forward that works best for you.

My approach

I provide a professional, compassionate and down-to-earth approach, without judgement. I’ll help you understand yourself at a deeper level and help you increase your self-awareness that leads to real, lasting change rather than a short-term fix.

Within your appointments, I’ll draw on decades of clinical experience and training to help you make sense of patterns that may feel confusing or out of your control. I’ll make observations, ask questions, and offer insights that will help you understand why you respond the way you do, so the changes you make actually stick.

Above all, I’ll be alongside you every step of the way and offer a down to earth approach.

Integrative therapy

My practice is Integrative, meaning I draw on different methods and knowledge; Attachment Theory, Psychodynamic, IFS, Neuroscience/Neurobiology, including Modern Trauma Theory (Bessel van der Kolk, Janina Fischer).

I invite you to ask me any questions about these theories and how they can help you.

Regular sessions

As therapy is a process that requires regular commitment to build awareness and create change, weekly appointments are essential. This way of working is in alignment with accessing therapy in the NHS, following their NICE guidelines of what works best for the outcomes of therapy.

Be assured, I will be alongside you every step of the way.
